Qualitative Theory and Chemical Explanation

چکیده

Roald Hoffmann and other theorists claim that we we ought to use highly idealized chemical models (“qualitative models”) in order to increase our understanding of chemical phenomena, even though other models are available which make more highly accurate predictions. I assess this norm by examining one of the tradeoffs faced by model builders and model users — the tradeoff between precision and generality. After arguing that this tradeoff obtains in many cases, I discuss how the existence of this tradeoff can help us defend Hoffmann’s norm for modelling. ∗Many thanks to Michael Friedman, Robin Hendry, Ben Kerr, Deena Skolnick, Peter Godfrey-Smith, and Michael Strevens for extremely helpful comments on earlier drafts of this and related papers. John Brauman, Marc Feldman, Paul Needham, Joan Roughgarden, Janet Stemwedel, and Ward Watt also provided helpful comments in conversations about these themes. Most of all I would like to thank Roald Hoffmann who has been an inspiring mentor and who’s reflections on the philosophical aspects of chemistry stimulated my interest in this topic. This research was partially supported by a National Science Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship.

Development of a Simulator for Explaining Organic Chemical Reactions Based on Qualitative Process Theory

This paper discusses the development of a qualitative simulator (abbreviated QRiOM) for predicting the behaviour of organic chemical reactions. The simulation technique is based on the qualitative process theory (QPT) ontology. The modelling constructs of QPT embody notions of causality which can be used to explain the behaviour of a chemical system. The major theme of this work is that, in a q...

Explanation of Qualitative Values in a Space with a view on the Capabilities of Vernacular Architecture (Case Study: Context-Based Architectural Schools)

The aim of the current has been based on explaining the introduction of hidden and apparent factors in the context and ground of architecture, which can be influenced by it in the process of audience’s educability from a new aspect; therefore, the “data-based theory”, which is one of the newest qualitative research methods, was applied and in order to demonstrate its efficiency, Yazd Faculty of...

An Ontology-Based Reasoning Framework for Reaction Mechanisms Simulation

Many chemistry students have difficulty in understanding an organic chemistry subject called reaction mechanisms. Mastering the subject would require the application of chemical intuition and chemical commonsense adequately. This work discusses a novel framework using Qualitative Reasoning (QR) to provide means for learning reaction mechanisms through simulation. The framework consists of a num...

Design and development of a qualitative simulator for learning organic reactions

Our work features an ontology-supported framework for developing a qualitative simulator for explaining the behaviors of selected sample of organic chemistry reactions. The design of the simulator uses Qualitative Reasoning (QR), and in particular, Qualitative Process Theory (QPT) for constructing qualitative models and the simulation of basic steps in the chemical reactions such as creating an...
